Tapis is a cotton sarong decorated with weft supplementary weave and/or with embroidery. A particular tapis is tapis raja (the one and only king). Such a cloth is characterised by wide silk bands with ikat motifs of a king astride an elephant or horse, and followed by a guard. In between the bands there may be gold thread couched embroidery.

Tapis by means of their motif designate the status of the wearer.
